AFC Praises Passage of D.C. Scholarship Bill from Key Committee
The American Federation for Children (AFC) today applauded the advancement of the bill to reauthorize the highly-successful D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program by a U.S. House of Representatives Committee. By a 21-14 margin, the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform passed the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Act on to a vote by the full House.

Making charter schools more accountable
Missouri was the 27th state to pass charter school legislation in 1998. In other states, charter school legislation was passed to expand opportunities for teacher creativity and increase student achievement. Other states passed it to offer an alternative to pending voucher legislation.

Mo. bill would allow vouchers for private schools
A state House member wants to amend the Missouri Constitution to let parents receive public funding to send children to religious schools. The proposal by Jefferson City Republican Jay Barnes would repeal a prohibition on public money going to religious schools. If approved by the full House and Senate, it would go on a statewide ballot.
